I know it’s February but I’m gonna do this anyway!!!

As I mentioned in November’s How I Spent My Money post, I’m going to see which of my expenses contributed to, maintained, or detracted from my happiness, in addition to going over my usual numbers.

This is my final installment of How I Spent My Money for 2017.

Total spending: -$658

This is $246 under budget, mostly thanks to the fact that I returned an expensive leather jacket. (Without it, I would be $262 over budget.)

Here’s the breakdown:

I know it’s barely December anymore (or, possibly, it’s 2018 for some of you), but I can’t bring myself to abandon this post series, so! Here’s the latest installment of How I Spent My Money.

As I mentioned in October’s post, I’ve decided to rework the way I assess my budget because my previous system wasn’t particularly useful for me.

In addition to measuring how many dollars over or under my target spending amount I was, I’m going to look at November’s expenses and ask myself which expenses added happiness (or removed unhappiness) vs. maintained happiness vs. added unhappiness (or removed happiness).

Total spending: -$2539

This is $1635 over budget. (lmao)

Here’s the breakdown:

I know it’s almost December (!!!), but let’s ignore that for a moment so I can knock this How I Spent My Money blog post out.

Back in October, I took a trip to LA to watch my friends get married (!!!), got a bunch of money back for items I returned, and took care of some healthcare items I’d been procrastinating on all year.

The end result?

Me, hella happy and pretty healthy, and somehow under budget. 😎

Total spending: -$583

That’s a whole $321 under budget, which is great, but also a little misleading. Here’s why:

As I mentioned in my August installment of How I Spent My Money, I’ve decided to switch over to a 5-category budget broken down like so: Going Out, Necessary, Frivolous, Gifts, and Travel.

Here’s how I did in September.

Total spending: -$1742

This puts me at $838 over budget, which is pretty damn bad. Let’s break this baby down.

Today marks Halloween 1st, so here’s my requisite apology for failing to post August’s installment of How I Spent My Money until now, and a picture of a vErY sPoOkY cat:

So! In July’s How I Spent My Money post (and possibly in previous posts before that), I proposed setting aside a separate part of my budget for travel expenses and gifts, which is what I then tried out in August.

Total spending: -$1216

With my previous 3-category budget, that puts me at $616 over budget.

With my new 5-category budget, that puts me at $312 over budget.

Either way, not great, but the 5-category budget does seem to work better in terms of alleviating my guilt over spending on myself. (I tend to put spending on others before spending on myself – e.g. not skimping on a gift for someone else, and then choosing not to dine out to make up for it – when in fact my desires should come first, or at least be equally important as those of others.)

Despite the pattern set by my previous How I Spent My Money posts, I am not in fact going to start this post with “I am appalled by how much money I spent,” because, for the first time, I’m not appalled.

Technically, I stayed well under budget in July, but this was mostly because of store returns and money that people owed me from previous months, which means there’s still plenty of questionable spending to investigate, so let’s take a look.

Here’s the breakdown for July:

Total spending: -$298

$302 under budget?! Is this real life??? Yes, yes it is. But, as you may have guessed, this is a misleading number, as you’ll see once we look closer…

Once again I find myself beginning a How I Spent My Money post appalled by how over budget I went last month, though to be fair, in June I did go on a 4-day trip/vacation and pay for a future bachelorette party and 5-day trip/vacation (which are both related to my friend Victoria’s wedding).

(I think the takeaway is that I need to set aside a travel/event budget rather than count it as a regular expense, because it’s not.)

Anyway, here’s the breakdown for June:

Total spending: -$1135

This is $535 over budget, which is really terrible, especially because…

Emergency family-related expenses: $0

…there were no more emergency family-related expenses in June (thank goodness). While this is a good thing, it also means that I overspent in every other category, as you’ll see.
